Local produce!

The weather’s getting warmer, my summer shorts are out of storage, my garden has been planted, and it’s time for fresh veggies from your garden or local market! Whether you go to a farmers’ market or grow your own, there’s nothing like fresh locally-grown fruit and veggies.

For several years I’ve been buying produce from a nearby no-till sustainable practices farm. This year I took the plunge into Community Supported Agriculture (CSA). We “subscribe” to the CSA and every week get a box, bag or basket of seasonal produce. What we get each week varies depending on what’s growing but it’s always fresh and a good reason to try new recipes! You can find out more about CSA here.

June finally brings warm weather and our Building Healthy Communities first outdoor potluck on Saturday, June 20, 1 - 3 PM, at Allardale Park in northern Medina County (401 Remsen Road entrance). It’s free but please let us know you’re coming by registering here on EventBrite.

I hope you can come! If you’re curious about our monthly potlucks, please consider coming. You do not have to be plant-based to attend – just come and enjoy the food and company! If you do bring a dish all we ask is that it be plant-based, but if you’re not ready to do that, no worries, come and see!

Elsewhere, I will teach the class “Plant Powered Plates: Keys for Natural Appetite Control” on June 11 from 10 to noon at the Soprema Senior Center in Wadsworth. To register, call the Center at 330-225-1513 or email SSC@WadsworthCity.org. You’ll need to join the Center but it’s free!

Boy oh boy is this a busy month! It closes out with the always exciting National Health Association conference in Cleveland June 25 - 28. You can attend in person or virtually. They describe it as the “premier event dedicated to the power of a whole-food, plant-based lifestyle.” And you meet many other plant-based friends!

Finally, the sweet potato saga continues. Last month you learned that my forgotten sweet potato had sprouted and I put it into dirt. Recently I removed the sprouts, which now have leaves, and I’m trying to root them in water before planting. We shall see!
